Nebraskans will soon be able to cast their ballots in the Nov. 5 general election.

To help you navigate the election process, the Nebraska Independent is publishing this voting guide, including details on voter registration, finding polling locations, and how to deal with problems that may arise on Election Day.

When is the election?

Tuesday, Nov. 5. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central Time and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mountain Time

Register to vote

See if you are registered to vote here.

See the Nebraska Secretary of State elections page here.

Oct. 18: Last day to register to vote online.

Oct. 25: Last day to register to vote in person at your county election office.

Voting by mail

Fill out the vote-by-mail ballot application and mail it to your local election office.

Sept. 30: Mail-in ballots start being sent to voters.

Oct. 25: Last Day that Vote-By-Mail applications can be submitted.

Nov. 5: Last day that Vote-By-Mail ballots can be received by county election offices.

In-person early voting

Oct. 7: First Day to vote early in person, at your county election office.

Nov. 4: Last Day to vote early in person, at your county election office.

Election Day voting

Voter ID

This is the first year that Nebraska will require a photo ID to vote. See the acceptable forms of ID here. You can get a free state ID card at a local Department of Motor Vehicles office

Report voting problems or intimidation

Threatening, harassing, or intimidating voters outside or inside a polling place, at secure ballot receptacles, at mailboxes, or at county election offices is illegal. You can call the national Election Protection Hotline at 866-687-8683 (Spanish: 888- 839-8682; Arabic: 844-915-5187; Asian Languages: 888-274-8683; video American Sign Language video line: 301-818-8683).

You can also call Civic Nebraska’s Election Protection Line at 402-890-5291 or the Common Cause Voter Hotline at 866-687-8683 to report any problems.
